today after getting my hair cut (damn the barber...he overdid it -__-), i walked home and i looked up, wow, a damn blue sky. wow. because how many days in a year will you get to see a clear solid blue sky in Singapore -___- ...

after i reached home, somehow within a few hours i was outside again, having "brokered" deals to sell a game and trade another in a short amount of time. anyway took the opportunity to visit Cathay Photo again and....

You know what this reminds me of ? Cooking oil...

I know it's a disgusting photo...but anyway.... it never cease to amaze me how often i can find vomit in my lift....yucks. maybe there's something about the colour and dullness of the lift that triggers the regurgitation in people...

disassembling, breaking, and fixing my zenitar 16mm fisheye lens

i have just received my zenitar 16mm fisheye lens from the postman yesterday, and immediately tested out my lens with the m42-minolta AF adapter on my Dynax 5D. reading from somewhere else, i expected my photos to be blurry whether the aperture is set to f2.8 or even f8. and it turned out to be true.

tempted by how a person fixed his zenitar lens by tweaking the focusing ring after removing some screws, I did the same.

I removed the three slightly big set screws near the rear element of the lens and opened it up, but couldn't see the focusing ring as described in that webpage. (it was after emailing the guy that I actually removed the wrong set of screws, but that's a story for later)

In the end I didn't get anything fixed, instead I screwed myself up when somehow i made the aperture ring unable to move the aperture blades at all, making the aperture stuck at f2.8.

But somehow just now i managed to fixed back my lens and realised there's something else that affects the aperture setting. For the benefit of people who might got into the messy problem I've got, I have therefore put up how i repaired the thing...

This is how the lens looks after the top is removed.

The aperture ring actually moves the blades by having a small metal piece fixed on the aperture ring to move the mechanism (just in case you took out the ring and didn't know how to fix back).

My problem arises when this spring sprung out of its placing. By using a pincer, slide one hook to the bigger metal rod (the below one here in this picture) and then hook the other side back to the other small rod. The slightly bigger metal rod is the mechanism to actually open and close the aperture blades.

This is the rear element. It was a big "doh" (i knew about this but forgot when I received my lens), but actually you need to push down that "aperture pin" to make sure the aperture can be stepped down below f2.8 (correct me if i'm wrong here). Push it down with a toothpick. It should stay down (there's no way to let it go up unless you removed the piece above and push it from the other side).

This spring thingy is the one that blocks the aperture blades from moving if you didn't depress down the aperture pin I talked about in the previous post.

It was a huge relief to see the blades moving as usual now. If not my S$200 would have been gone by now. Anyway I'm going out now to test out the lens. About moving the internal focusing ring thing, probably I will try on another day and tell you all the results.

It has been a very fulfilling and enjoyable road trip for the four of us (CK,LZ,JJ and me) on 25-28th March, especially when we do not drive on a regular basis. There were some minor hiccups here and there but nothing major to take away the fun of this trip.

I present to you all some of the loads of photos jointly taken by everyone of us, and then some. All photos were uncropped, but some sharpened while others were added with some visual effects, using Picasa. Albums also generated by Picasa (because I'm a lazy person haha).
